Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, Task Manager, etc.), I seem to get an error message at random about a fault in the application caused by 'comctl32.dll'. What's annoying is, once this pops up, it closes the application, and when I try to open it or any other windows app, it pops up again and closes it. So whenever this happens, I'm forced to log off and log on again, possibly losing some unsaved data. Found another one. ![]() ![]() It is not a Vista file. It may be part of a library installed by an application that you installed. If you can find it in a program folder, you can either replace just that file with a copy extracted from the file I linked below, or you can run the downlaoded exe and install the whole library. Comctl32.dll is the dll file that controls Windows Open/Save As dialog boxes. Having run the system checker, it did not find any errors but given that as of now applications randomly crash while attempting to use the Open/Save As dialog created with this dll, I have reason to believe it has become damaged or corrupt. Just today, ESS crashed while updating, caused by a 'ntdll.dll'. It apparently crashes some other applications at random just like my comctl32.dll. What is comctl32.dll? This file is a part of Microsoft Windows Operatin System. Was developed by MicrosoftCorporation. This is a system file, or, possibly, hidden. It is usually located in%System% folder and its size is 597 Kb. Most comctl32.dll errors associated with the loss or damage of the corresponding file. Even force PC shutdown or virus may cause the file corruption that in turn will lead to DLL errors. In such errors, file it can not be loaded correctly, and this leads to an error message. In other cases, comctl32.dll messages may be associated with errors in the Windows registry. Incorrect links to the DLL files can prevent proper registering this file file. Such incorrect registry keys may appear as a result of the loss of the file or move it to another location as a result of incorrect program installation or uninstallation.
